Dismantling the School to Prison Pipeline for Students with Special Needs

As we examine systemic inequities, we must also at how we identify and serve students with specialized needs. The overrepresentation of students with special needs in the prison system shows that we are falling short of IDEA’s mandate to prepare students to “lead productive and independent lives, to the maximum extent possible.” Part of this critical examination of our school system includes dismantling overly punitive disciplinary policies, which disproportionately affect students from minority backgrounds and students with special needs.
